Birmingham, Alabama Newborn Photographer: When to take Newborn Photos

In the perfect situation newborn portraits should be taken around 7-14 days after birth. Sometimes that just doesn't happen. My last son was born at 30 weeks and 6 days, he spent over a month in the NICU. I did his newborn images when he finally came home, it took awhile longer than normal but they still turned out great. He however was a lot smaller just weighing in a little over 5 pounds.

To wait or not to wait? I get a lot of clients saying they want their babies to fill out a little and that's understandable. But you need to remember when babies get heavier and fuller they do not curl up as easily and pose as well. When newborns are first born they are a lot more flexible. Think about those ultrasound pics with babies feet by their head lol.

I never guarantee specific poses at my session. I do my very best to achieve the poses my clients want but babies lead the way in the session and some babies just refuse to do certain poses. There is no way to force a baby into a pose. When babies are content, full and sound asleep posing is easier. I will do my best to comfort baby and get the looks you want to achieve.

When you book a session I will send you a detailed newborn information packet where you can get a lot of suggestions how to help your session go smoothly. I have a detailed blog post on this as well here.
